Frederick A. Mitchell, Minister of Foreign
Affairs and the Public Service, has announced
that The Bahamas' Embassy in Havana, Republic
of Cuba, will be opened within the next
two months.
"The plans are quite advanced, with
the Ministry of Works having approved the
design of the building in the Cuban capital
and works have begun," Minister Mitchell
told the House of Assembly Monday, during
debate on the 2005-2006 budget.
The Minister said that Cuba is one of The
Bahamas' maritime neighbours, and that some
20,000 or more Bahamians travel to Cuba
every year.
"There is considerable demand for
consular and diplomatic services. The Embassy
is expected to meet that demand," he
said.
Carlton Wright, Undersecretary at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, has been named to head
the Embassy.
Cuba has already upgraded its Consulate
in Nassau to an Embassy and appointed former
Consul General Felix Wilson Gonzalez to
the post of Charge d'Affaires.
