Street vendor arrested, fined

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, June 5 (Niurvys Díaz Remond, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Police arrested Yunior Horta on May 22, fined him 40 pesos and confiscated about 27 dollars' worth of candy and chewing gum that he sells on the streets.

The sector chief for the Intercounty Bus Terminal took Horta to the 3rd police station in Santa Clara. Once there, said Horta, captain Lorenzo Machado confiscated his wares and refused to issue him a receipt for the merchandise.

Horta said the value of his merchandise adds up to about three month's salary for an average worker.

Horta, 29, said he supports himself and his son by selling the candy and pays taxes to the local authorities as required.
