Seasonings plant effectively shut down

HAVANA, Cuba, January 14 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - The "El Potro" seasonings plant has been effectively shut down by lack of materials, and dozens of workers have been idle for over ten days.

"Right now, they are only processing cumin," said one worker at the plant, "there are no cardboard boxes to pack the product."

The plant, located near the international airport, produces and packs seasonings destined for the local hard currency markets.

Employees who have been sent home are collecting one-third of their regular salaries, said the factory's employee, or about 60 pesos (approximately two dollars) a month.
