Authorities cannot stop pilferage at cigarette factory

RANCHUELO, Cuba, January 14 ( Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Authorities seem to be powerless to stop the pilferage of raw materials at the Ramiro Lavandero Cruz cigarette factory in Ranchuelo. In a recent move, they decreed the security detail assigned to the factory will be limited to patrolling the outside of the facility.

Factory workers are subject to rigorous controls; many are strip-searched at the end of their work shift. Administrative personnel and visitors are the only ones who are not searched as they enter and leave by the door in the director's office.

There are many in Cuba who produce cigarettes and cigars at home to supplement their meager incomes, and for that end they use raw materials stolen from State enterprises. Generally, cigars are sold to tourists, and cigarettes end up in the local black market, where they are known as "tupamaros."
