Louis B Homer, South Bureau.
Trinidad
& Tobago Express, Trinidad and Tobago,
Thursday, January 13 2005.
Mystery surrounds the disappearance of
a female Cuban nurse who was recruited by
the Trinidad Government to work in the nation's
health sector.
Officials at Port of Spain General Hospital,
where nurse Jannet Eve Perez Cardinas, 30,
works, said yesterday she had not reported
for duty since last Thursday.
Cardinas arrived in Trinidad last October
in a batch of 14 other nurses from Cuba
and was living in the nurses' quarters on
Charlotte Street, Port of Spain.
Health Minister John Rahael told the Express:
"The matter has not reached my desk
but I will make further investigations."
Investigators looking into her disappearance
have ruled out foul play but are working
mainly on the theory that Cardinas could
have skipped Trinidad and is seeking asylum
in another country.
A close male friend of Cardinas, who lives
in Arouca, is believed to have received
a phone call and an e-mail from her. She
was said to be in Miami,USA. The friend
could not be reached yesterday.
There are now 60 Cuban nurses posted to
various institutions and districts in Trinidad
and Tobago. They came to Trinidad directly
from Havana, Cuba.
