Man fired for father's political activism

PINAR DEL RÍO, Cuba, January 5 (Rafael Ferro Salas, Abdala Press / www.cubanet.org) - When GEOCUBA administrators fired him from his job, the only reason they gave him was that he is the son of a political activist opposed to the government, said José Antonio Martínez' father, also of the same name.

Martínez, 24, worked as a technician for GEOCUBA, a commercial enterprise owned and operated by the Cuban Armed Forces.

"My son never had disciplinary problems there; he was always a good worker," said Martínez' father.

The father is a member of the Party of the People, a dissident organization.

Martínez' father said he has not been able to find employment either due to his opposition to the government, which he stressed, has always been peaceful.
