Dissident leader detained by police

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, November 23 (Rafael Ferro Salas, Abdala Press / www.cubanet.org) - Mario Izquierdo Sotolongo, a candidate for the presidency of the Máximo Gómez Báez National Civic Movement, was detained by police this week.

Eliosber Garriga of the Racial Integration Movement said that Izquierdo's detention was probably a result of his candidacy in the human rights organization.

"The members of Máximo Gómez Báez had planned a meeting for the election and it's to be supposed that this information 'filtered' out and the political police detained Mario to frustrate the event," said Garriga.

Garriga was detained by Ramón Beune of the political police.
