The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights Awards the Premio Paloma

HAVANA, Cuba, April 7 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén, Lux Info Press / ww.cubanet.org) - The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights awarded the second annual Premio Paloma 2005 to independent journalists Normando Hernández González, a resident of Vertientes in the province of Camagüey , director of the College of Independent Journalists of Camagüey (CPIC), and a prisoner of conscience arrested with the Sentencing of the 75 (March, 2003) and to Jesús Alvarez Castillo, a reporter for Cuba Press and Nueva Prensa Cubana who resides in Morón in Ciego de Avila province.

The panel of judges that met on March 13th in Ciego de Avila and was composed of independent journalists Abé; Escobar Ramírez. Carlos Brizuela Year, and Luis Esteban Espinosa Echemendía also decided to award the Premio Paloma for the defense of human rights to the Sigler Amaya family, a family made up of well-known human rights activists who live in Matanzas.

The Premio Paloma consists of an authorized certificate and $600: $300 for the independent journalists (shared this year) and another $300 for outstanding human rights activism. The awarding of these prizes is planned for Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 11:00 AM.

"The Department of State Security mounted a surveillance operation around my house on Calle Honrato del Castillo #154 in Ciego de Avila, the national headquarters of The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights, and several of my family members were reprimanded the day the panel of judges made the selection,"stated Juan Carlos González Leiva, a lawyer and president of the Cuban Foundation of Human Rights.

González Leiva added that "The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights is especially grateful to the Association of Cuban-American Lawyers, based in Miami, for the donation of $600 for the prize. Appreciation is also extended to Mrs. Laida Carro, the "godmother" of the Cuban Foundation of Human Rights in exile, who has been helping with activities of this organization for years."

"The main objective of the Premio Paloma," says González Leiva, "is to internally recognize the difficult job of the independent press on the Island and also activities in defense of human rights in Cuba. The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights is the only anti-establishment institution that carries out this type of contest in Cuba."
