The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights Awards
the Premio Paloma
HAVANA, Cuba, April 7 (Reinaldo Cosano

- The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights awarded
the second annual Premio Paloma 2005 to
independent journalists Normando Hernández
González, a resident of Vertientes
in the province of Camagüey , director
of the College of Independent Journalists
of Camagüey (CPIC), and a prisoner
of conscience arrested with the Sentencing
of the 75 (March, 2003) and to Jesús
Alvarez Castillo, a reporter for Cuba Press
and Nueva Prensa Cubana who resides in Morón
in Ciego de Avila province.
The panel of judges that met on March 13th
in Ciego de Avila and was composed of independent
journalists Abé; Escobar Ramírez.
Carlos Brizuela Year, and Luis Esteban Espinosa
Echemendía also decided to award
the Premio Paloma for the defense of human
rights to the Sigler Amaya family, a family
made up of well-known human rights activists
who live in Matanzas.
The Premio Paloma consists of an authorized
certificate and $600: $300 for the independent
journalists (shared this year) and another
$300 for outstanding human rights activism.
The awarding of these prizes is planned
for Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 11:00 AM.
"The Department of State Security
mounted a surveillance operation around
my house on Calle Honrato del Castillo #154
in Ciego de Avila, the national headquarters
of The Cuban Foundation of Human Rights,
and several of my family members were reprimanded
the day the panel of judges made the selection,"stated
Juan Carlos González Leiva, a lawyer
and president of the Cuban Foundation of
Human Rights.
González Leiva added that "The
Cuban Foundation of Human Rights is especially
grateful to the Association of Cuban-American
Lawyers, based in Miami, for the donation
of $600 for the prize. Appreciation is also
extended to Mrs. Laida Carro, the "godmother"
of the Cuban Foundation of Human Rights
in exile, who has been helping with activities
of this organization for years."
"The main objective of the Premio
Paloma," says González Leiva,
"is to internally recognize the difficult
job of the independent press on the Island
and also activities in defense of human
rights in Cuba. The Cuban Foundation of
Human Rights is the only anti-establishment
institution that carries out this type of
contest in Cuba."
