Church closed in Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, April 8 (Yilybed Santana
Quirós, Cubanacán Press /
www.cubanet.org) - Sunday, April 3, after
services, the representative of the Churches
of Christ in Villa Clara province told the
preacher of the church sited in José
Martí subdivision that the Church
Council had decided to close the church.
The Council's representative, Edelton Villa,
told preacher Eugenio Alfredo Martínez
that the Council had information that Martínez'
wife, Rosario Irene Barata, meets regularly
with anti-government elements and celebrated
dates considered significant by government
opponents. The information, Villa said,
was forwarded to the Council by the Department
of State Security and officers of the provincial
religious affairs office.
During Sunday's service, the 30 or so members
of the congregation were told that starting
April 15, a new regulation will go into
effect that forbids churches to operate
from multi-family dwellings.
The congregation had been meeting in apartment
4 of building 28 in G Street, José
Martí subdivision since November
5, 2000. Since then, members said, the congregation
had been meeting for Bible study without
incident.
