Democratic Solidarity Party splits with the Assembly to Promote Civil Society in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, March 31 (Roberto Santana Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org) - The dissident Democratic Solidarity Party decided at a meeting last week to withdraw from the Assembly to Promote Civil Society in Cuba.

According to a communique from the party sent to executives of the Assembly following the meeting March 22, there was disagreement about methods to achieve democratic changes in Cuba.

The Solidarity party said that changes were needed in Cuba but that it was not feasible to continue associated with the Assembly for the sake of "false appearances" when these did not contribute to the development of either organization.

Said the communique: "Those methods respond to an old and questionable custom of making everything political, which lamentably exists in the circles of the old and new political classes, of which the PSD also was part of but which as of today it is taking steps to move away from."

The Solidarity party said it will continue to recognize the goals of the Assembly and wishes it success.
