Policemen try to rundown independent journalist

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, August 29 (Guillermo Fariñas, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Independent journalist Bernardo Arévalo Padrón was almost hit last week by a motorcycle carrying two members of the police force.

"I was riding my bicycle, as I always do, when I saw a Suzuki motorcycle had turned around and was heading towards me in the wrong direction on a one-way street," Arévalo Padrón said. "I instinctively dove for the sidewalk.

Arévalo Padrón, director of the Línea Sur Press, said he identified the driver of the motorcycle as a lieutenant named Roberto and that the passenger as Captain Pedro Méndez Fundora, both members of the political police.

The incident occurred at 10 a.m. on Céspedes Street. Several people witnessed the incident.

Arévalo Padrón is a former political prisoner who served a six-year sentence.
