Home of independent journalist and librarian searched by police

HAVANA, August 29 (Ernesto Roque Cintero, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The home of independent journalist and librarian Lázaro Raúl González in Pinar del Río province was searched by police last week who said they heard there was a fire arm there.

Clara Capote, González's wife, said the police arrived at 8:30 p.m. on August 19 and had a search order signed by a Colonel Almeida, chief of the National Revolutionary Police in Consolación del Sur.

"The search was carried out against our will," she said. "We're peaceful people and we don't know the real motive for the search, but we assume it's an act of intimidation by the authorities, since President and Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro were going to make a quick visit to the area."

González was taken to police headquarters after he refused to show his identification carnet to the police.
