Public transportation in Havana worsens

HAVANA, Cuba, August 29 (Ariel Delgado Covarrubias / www.cubanet.org) - A worsening of public transportation in Havana has caused grumbling among those who depend on the bus service.

"This unbearable," said a youth at a bus stop at the busy corner of Boyeros and 100. "I've been waiting for two hours and the buses don't stop."

There were an estimated 80 people waiting at the stop, while dozens more awaited buses going in another direction.

"Not all of us having money for a taxi," said in a man in his forties.

"They still want us to arrive early at work," said a woman holding her infant son in her arms.

Summer vacations have increased the number of people traveling by bus, while the number of units available has decreased because of mechanical problems.

One man waiting for a bus said the government will have to buy more buses or distribute bicycles among residents, as was done in the nineties.
