State company in Cienfuegos fires 40 workers
to cut costs
CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, August 25 (Vicente Pérez,

- State-run businesses in Cuba are feeling
some of the economic pressure that affects
businesses in capitalist countries.
Last week the Empresa Municipal de Comercio
in Cienfuegos fired 40 employees, among
them store clerks, janitorial workers and
guards.
The company's human resources deputy director,
president, José Acosta said the measure
was taken because salaries alone were outstripping
income.
"These won't be the only ones to lose
their jobs," he said.
Reports from the company said that up to
300 employees might be laid off before the
end of the year.
