Imprisoned independent journalist forced
to strip naked

Omar Moisés Ruiz Hernández
says he was forced to remove all of his
clothing in front of a prison official before
being allowed to enter the conjugal pavilion
for a meeting with his wife.
"I believe this was a great humiliation
of my human and Christian integrity by Eduardo
Sosa Pérez, second in command at
the prison," said Ruiz Hernandez of
the incident, which occurred at the Canaleta
prision in Ciego de Ávila province
on August 18. He said his wife, Bárbara
Rojo Arias, was closely examined before
and after entering the pavilion, but was
not forced to disrobe.
Ruiz Hernández said in a telephone
call from the prison that he complained
to State Security and was assured he would
not be forced to disrobe in the future.
The father of three, he was sentenced in
2003 during the crackdown on dissidents
to 18 years in prison. He is a journalist
of the Grupo de Trabajo Decoro.
