Imprisoned independent journalist forced to strip naked

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, August 30 (Guillermo Fariñas, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Independent journalist Omar Moisés Ruiz Hernández says he was forced to remove all of his clothing in front of a prison official before being allowed to enter the conjugal pavilion for a meeting with his wife.

"I believe this was a great humiliation of my human and Christian integrity by Eduardo Sosa Pérez, second in command at the prison," said Ruiz Hernandez of the incident, which occurred at the Canaleta prision in Ciego de Ávila province on August 18. He said his wife, Bárbara Rojo Arias, was closely examined before and after entering the pavilion, but was not forced to disrobe.

Ruiz Hernández said in a telephone call from the prison that he complained to State Security and was assured he would not be forced to disrobe in the future.

The father of three, he was sentenced in 2003 during the crackdown on dissidents to 18 years in prison. He is a journalist of the Grupo de Trabajo Decoro.
