Street vendors detained in Cienfuegos

CIENFUEGOS, Cuba - August 16 (Luis Miguel González Leyva, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - The National Revolutionary Police detained and fined a group of street vendors who were selling fruits and vegetables at lower prices than those in state stores.

Using a urban transportation bus for cover, the agents seized the products of six vendors operating on Castillo Street at 1:30 p.m., August 2.

Ramón Peña, one of those detained, said: "These measures are abusive. They fined me 1,500 pesos. As well, they took 14 packages of macaroni that I was selling at lower prices than the state, helping to alleviate the hunger of many people."
