English puts Cuban on cigar roll

Sondra Barr, The Arizona Republic, Aug. 22, 2005.

If you're looking to score a hand-rolled Cuban cigar, Guillermo "Willy" Carrazana is ready to talk business.

The Chandler resident spoke scant English a year ago. Now, the 55-year-old Cuban cigarmaker is armed with an English Language Learner certificate and recently became a U.S. citizen with the help of Chandler's City of Readers Education programs.

Carrazana was at the Phoenix Park N Swap when he heard about the free English classes being offered in his own city.

"I receive many orders by fax and e-mail," he said. "It's very important when the people call you that you understand them."

He estimates that orders for Willy's Cigars, the cigar-rolling company he operates out of his home, have increased 30 percent in the past 12 months.
