Shortage of water prompts protest

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba - August 10 (Rosa María Montoya, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Residents of the neighborhood known as Alturas de Ciudamar recently went into the streets with empty pails to protest a water shortage that has lasted more than 40 days.

Some of the protesters hung up posters, including one which said: "Terrorism isn't just placing bombs but also killing a people with calamities."

The protest started at 5 p.m. and by 9 p.m. water tankers were on the street distributing water.

Residents thought the quick response to their protests was due in part to the importance of the area, where the Motel Versalles is located. It houses patients from Venezuela who are recovering from medical treatment.
