Paramilitaries prevent dissidents from holding
meeting
HAVANA, August 11 (Ernesto Roque Cintero,
UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - A paramilitary
group forcibly prevented 10 dissidents from
holding a meeting this week.
The dissidents, members of the Assembly
to Promote Civil Society in Cuba, had scheduled
a Tuesday morning meeting in the municipality
of Arroyo Naranajo.
Reports said that Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello
suffered scratches to her arms, although
officials of the political police had told
the group of some 60 paramilitary members
that the dissidents were not to be hurt.
Because of the confrontation, the dissidents
did not hold their meeting.
"This is a demonstration of the intolerance
of the regime," said Roque Cabello,
"but there were no young people among
those who provoked us, which shows that
the Cuban youth don't follow them.
"We're going to continue working,"
she said. "Despite the threats and
provocations, we're not going to give up
even a millimeter of the rights we've gained."
