CABINET yesterday approved a $30 million
aid package to Caricom states and Cuba to
assist in the relief efforts in those countries
following the damage caused by the passage
of Hurricane Ivan last week.
Housing Minister Dr Keith Rowley confirmed
this during the weekly post-Cabinet news
conference at Whitehall, Maraval Road, Port
of Spain, yesterday.
In giving a breakdown, Rowley said $10
million was allocated for Grenada which
was severely affected by the hurricane;
Jamaica got $10 million; St Vincent $4 million;
and the Bahamas and Cuba $3 million each.
Meanwhile, Trade Minister Ken Valley said
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and BWIA
were working on getting about 50 nationals
out of the Cayman Islands and back home
by this weekend.
He said the ministry was trying to get
the nationals to either Miami or Kingston
first, and would then get the national airline
to bring them to Trinidad and Tobago.
"We would do it rather quickly, I
would think within the next two days maximum,"
he added.
