Clear reception for Radio Martí
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, September 14 (Cubanacán
Press / www.cubanet.org) - As an unintended
result of preparations for hurricane Ivan,
residents of Villa Clara province, in central
Cuba, were able to tune in U. S. based Radio
Martí, when Cuban government civil
defense crews took down antennas that normally
interfere with the signal.
Reportedly, the only frequency that remained
affected was 1180 in the AM band, shadowed
by Cuban station Radio Rebelde broadcasting
in the same frequency.
Listeners reported, however, that by the
afternoon of Monday 13, when the hurricane
had drifted west, interference became a
factor again.
Many listeners report that Radio Martí
broadcasts are a welcome relief from Cuban
government stations regular fare, saying
that lately the U.S. based station broadcast
hurricane updates every half hour whereas
the Cuban stations issued historic and didactic
screeds on hurricanes as well as lengthy
reports on government preparations for the
hurricane.
