More than 100 teachers quit last year in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, September 7 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - More than 100 teachers quit during the last school year in just one Havana municipality, Arroyo Naranjo, according to a report read at a Communist party meeting.

A teacher who was at the meeting and who asked not to be named said most of the participants pointed to the difficulties teachers face daily and to the low pay they receive.

Salaries, the teacher said, average 241 pesos a month, or less than 10 dollars. She said her salary is 350 pesos, or 13 dollars because she has a teaching degree.
