FROM CUBA
Cuban government effort directed against consumer fraud

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, October 21 (Javier Machado, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Municipal authorities in Santa Clara launched an effort to protect consumers against fraud.

The operation began at 5 a.m. Friday and concentrated initially on 14 local bakeries, finding eight of them sold underweight bread, said chief Price inspector Rafael Marichal.

Inspectors levied fines on the transgressors and forwarded reports of the irregularities to higher authorities in the province.

Marichal allowed that workers' dining halls also tamper with the weight of foodstuffs sold, but said some of that was due to the lack of specified products.

Marichal said his department will continue to monitor and enforce controls especially in the food industry, in which consumer fraud is most frequent.
