Returned rafters complain of harassment in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, September 29 (Roberto Santana Rodríguez / www. cubanet.org) - Returned rafter Maikel Pérez says the fine he owes is up to 6,000 pesos by now and he is afraid he is going to end up in jail because he can't pay it.

Maikel, along with companions Michel Torres and Norberto Chacón, were intercepted in the Florida Straits in April and returned to the Cuban port of Mariel.

Maikel said that two agents of the Department of State Security, who only identified themselves as Henry and Andrés, showed up at his home September 21 and told him that the fine he owed had been doubled because he hadn't paid on time.

"I don't have the money, and I'm afraid at any time police will come and take me. I'm being closely watched by Henry, who said he was willing to follow me for the rest of my life," said Maikel.
