Cuban garbage collectors claim back pay

HAVANA, Cuba, September 28 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - Garbage collectors in 10 de Octubre municipality are complaining that they have only been paid 50% of their wages after hurricanes Charley and Ivan.

The workers say municipal authorities promised to pay all their wages after hurricane cleanup, but now say that it's too much money.

One worker said there are more than 200 garbage workers involved in the dispute. The average amount owed to each worker is around 1,400 pesos, or a little more than 50 dollars.

"After Charley, they told us they would pay whatever was necessary, but it didn't happen. Then after Ivan they told us this time it was for real and there would be no problems with the money, but they fooled us again," said one of the workers.
