Parents barred from primary school
HAVANA, May 13 (José Antonio Fornaris,
Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - School
administrators barred parents from the "Carlos
Gutiérrez Menoyo" primary school
in the Havana suburb of Arroyo Naranjo,
ostensibly as a result of the theft of a
VCR from the principal's office.
The VCR, presumably stolen from a closet
in the office, was used as a substitute
for scarce teachers. The machines are not
generally sold to the population in Cuba,
and bring between 230 and 270 dollars in
the black market.
"Now, at the end of the school day,
we have to wait for the children outside,"
said Lourdes Betancourt, whose son attends
the school. "But it was practically
impossible for a parent to go into the principal's
office to steal the VCR. We did not have
free access to that office," she added.
The VCR was reportedly stolen during school
hours.
