Whistle blower demoted as punishment
SANTA CLARA, June 15 (Guillermo Fariñas,

- Economist Félix Reyes Gutiérrez
was demoted Friday as punishment for blowing
the whistle on corruption and theft at the
Ramiro Lavandero Cruz cigarette factory
in Villa Clara, where he works.
Reyes had been working in the accounting
department and has been assigned to do agricultural
labor. The official statement charged Reyes
with transgressions of labor discipline;
Reyes said he simply insisted he be searched
on leaving the plant, as called for by regulations.
Security agents said he had demanded the
personal search in a "disrespectful
manner."
Reyes said it's all a pretext to get him
out, because he has repeatedly denounced
theft at the factory.
The assistant director of human resources,
Antero Alós Madrigal, who Reyes has
identified as the "visible face of
the corrupt mafia" at the factory,
told Reyes starting Monday 14, he will be
doing field work.
Reyes has been similarly punished before.
In February 2000, he was removed from his
job as manager of the dollar store La Nobleza,
in Ranchuelo and stripped of his Communist
party membership. He said in that case,
he had denounced the theft of stock from
the store, one of a chain operated by the
Armed Forces ministry.
