National media issues warning to swimmers
HAVANA, July 21 (Ariel Delgado Covarrubias
/ www.cubanet.org) - The official government
media issued a warning to swimmers about
the perils of accidents in the water.
According to the report, drowning is the
third leading cause of death for all ages,
and the second for people under 20. Last
year, 266 people, or one every day and a
half, on average, died by drowning.
A substantial number of the victims are
children, who drown not only in beaches
and rivers, but as a result of accidents
around the home, by falling into wells,
tanks, irrigation canals and other bodies
of water.
The report mentioned as contributory factors
to drowning the inability to swim, the ingestion
of alcohol, lack of knowledge about swimming
places, and preexisting medical conditions.
