Energy cuts affect workers' salaries
HAVANA, June 29 (Víctor Manuel
Domínguez, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org)
- Energy-saving rolling blackouts decreed
by authorities in Villa Clara province are
adversely affecting workers' wages as businesses
close and workers fall short of production
goals.
Often, power consumption regulators assign
a quota of energy to a business, and if
the business exceeds the allowable consumption,
start cutting off power to it.
Sometimes, the surrounding area to the
business is also blacked-out, and neighbors
blame the business' administrators and workers
for their own penury.
Magaly Suárez, a labor activist
independent of government-controlled unions,
said during peak consumption hours of 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. cuts are made to curtail
overages which have been averaging 5 Megawatts
daily in the province.
