The Globe and Mail
Our guide to what's on worldwide Cuba bans U.S. greenback

The Globe and Mail, Canada, Wednesday, December 8, 2004.

Before you head out on your next business trip, find out what the GlobeTrotter editors have to say about the city.

Goods and services in Cuba, including lodging, can no longer be purchased using U.S. cash or U.S.-dollar travellers cheques originating from any country, according to a Department of Foreign Affairs travel advisory.

All purchases have to be made with the Cuban convertible peso (which is kept at par with the U.S. dollar).

U.S. currency can be exchanged, but a 10-per-cent fee is charged for the transaction. Canadian currency and travellers cheques can be exchanged for convertible pesos without the conversion fee.

Credit cards will continue to be accepted in major establishments, provided they are not issued by a U.S. bank. American Express cards are difficult to use, regardless of where they were issued. Debit cards are not accepted. Visa or MasterCard holders may obtain cash advances (in Cuban convertible pesos or in U.S. dollars) at banks, hotels, or Cadeca exchange houses.
