Man fired after trying to illegally leave Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, December 1 (www.cubanet.org) - Jesús Lázaro González says he was fired from his job at the Panamericana store one day after being returned to Cuba after being intercepted at sea while trying to flee the island.

González, 32, said the store justified his firing on trumped up charges that he had stolen more than $1,000.

Besides being fired, Gonzaléz was fined 300 pesos, more than his monthly salary at the store.

Under agreements signed in 1994 and 1994 between the United States and Cuba, no reprisals are to be taken against those caught trying to flee the country.
