Warehouse
manager accused of embezzling 16,000 dollars in
Cuba
HAVANA, August 29 (www.cubanet.org) - Ramón
Carro, the warehouse manager of the TRD Caribe
dollar store in the Havana municipality of San
Miguel del Padrón, was apprehended by border
guards as he attempted to leave the island with
his wife and children.
Subsequently, an audit of the warehouse's books
found there were 16,000 dollars missing. When
confronted with the information, Carro declared
that to show his revolutionary spirit, instead
of 16,000 he was going to refund 24,000 dollars.
This exchange was reportedly filmed and shown
to all the company's employees. One of them, who
asked not to be named, said he had been surprised,
because Carro was the most ardent Communist, lived
well, seemed to have plenty of money, and had
no obvious reason to flee the country.
The company, TRD Caribe, is operated by the Cuban
armed forces, and has dollar stores throughout
the island. Reportedly, company-wide embezzlement
amounts to about 8 million dollars.
