Cuban
human rights activists harassed in Camagüey
HAVANA, October 22 (www.cubanet.org) -
Two activists of the Cuban Foundation for
Human Rights in Florida, Camagüey province,
were called into the operations center of
the Department of State Security (DSE) in
an apparent attempt to intimidate them into
ceasing their activities.
Humberto Pérez and Enrique López
said they had been summoned by officer Rolando
López, of the provincial DSE.
"We were interrogated for three hours,"
said Enrique López. "They were
insisting on a videotape we made of an eviction.
They seemed interested in finding that tape.
In a very stern manner, although respectfully,
our interrogator told us the government
is not going to tolerate any activities
against the regime, that if we didn't desist,
they would take stern measures against us.
They issued us a warning, in which they
point out our association with 'elements
not allied to the Revolution, and allied
to the Miami mafia.' We signed the warning,
but with reservations. I wrote: I believe
in Christ and defend the 30 articles of
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,"
said López.
The warning is a preliminary step to an
indictment.
