Worm infestation paralizes milk cannery in Cuba

HAVANA, Septiembre 29 (www.cubanet.org) - A hard-to-erradicate worm infestation at the "Abigail González" condensed-milk cannery in the eastern province of Granma has paralized the plant repeatedly, causing confrontations between workers and management, who blame each other for the problems.

Managers ascribe the problem to negligence on the part of the workers in cleaning the equipment. Workers say they don't get enough cleaning supplies to do the job, adding that the work stoppages affect them directly in loss of salary. The government-controlled union sides solidly with management on the issue.

Luis Sergio Núñez, a delegate of the independent National Labor Confederation, said that about 70 workers are losing work time and salary due to the stoppages, which had never gone on as long as this.

"Hot water, chlorine, alcohol, and other chemicals, have not erradicated the worms, which accumulate in the interstices of the machinery," said Núñez. "Every morning, workers clean from 8 to 10, but the infestation remains."

Production at the plant is down by more than 50 percent.
