Cuban tobacco company won't pay bonuses to workers

HAVANA, Nov. 26 (www.cubanet.org) - Workers at the Feliú Leyva tobacco factory in Holguín, makers of Monte Cristo, Romeo y Julieta and Cohiba cigars, say the company is four months behind in paying agreed upon work bonuses.

More than 150 workers, among them those who prepare the tobacco leaves and those who roll the cigars, had been promised 30 dollars a month each if production goals were surpassed.

A 12-person delegation took the workers' complaints this week to the provincial government, but was told there were no funds available for the payments.

The cigars in question sell for between 250 and 1,000 dollars per box.
