Cuban retiree fined for selling candy

HAVANA, Cuba, November 7 (www.cubanet.org) - Authorities have twice fined a retiree for selling candy in the beaches east of Havana. The last time, they threatened him with a prohibitive 1,500 peso fine for a third offense.

Juan Antonio Guerra, of Boca de Jaruco, a town outside of Havana, said he sells the candy, which he makes at home, to supplement his retirement income of 150 pesos a month, or one-half his former salary.

Guerra, 62, said authorities fined him 40 and 70 pesos and confiscated all his product, for not having a commercial license and for not being able to document the purchases of the raw materials he uses, primarily the sugar, which is strictly rationed.

Guerra said after retirement he had taken a job as a night watchman with a government company, but he was subsequently fired because the job was set aside for a person of working-age.
