Luis Campos Corrales handcuffed and thrown from the second floor of the prison

(HAVANA, Cuba, November 2 / Puenteinfocubamiami.org) - In October 20, Luis Campos Corrales, political prisoner and member of the Democratic Party November 30 "Frank País", who is almost blind due to a bacterial infection was handcuffed and then thrown from the second floor of the prison Combinado del Este in Havana, by the officer in charge who goes by the name of Leonel with the aid of another prison official.

Campos Corrales was able to denounce the event to his mother Gregoria Corrales over the telephone, this Saturday, November 1, when he was granted permission to call to inquire about her health for she had eye surgery last Monday. He also told his mother that he was presently sleeping in the floor under some stairs in an unknown detachment at El Combinado del Este.

In the evening hours of November 2, Mrs. Corrales placed a telephone call to Ada Kaly Márquez, National Coordinator of the November 30 Party to let her know of her intentions going to the prison at the risk of loosing her sight and not leaving the premises until she saw her son. Mrs. Corrales was persuaded from going while she recuperates and members of the November 30 would try and get clarification as to the present state of the health of Campos Corrales.

According to information received by correspondents of Lux Info Press in Havana, after this incident with Campos Corrales, officials at Combinado del Este also dragged through the floor of the prison the political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo of the Alternative Republican Movement in Havana and member of the Civic Movement Committee of the Varela Project, who was unjustly sentenced to 18 years in prison in the recent wave of repression that began last March. They left Tamayo's back full of lacerations only because he was requesting medical attention.

Luis Campos Corrales is serving a 25 year sentence in the Cause #37 of 1994 for the supposed crime of piracy.

Urgent action of alert for the life of Rafael Ibarra Roque and Pedro Argüelles Morán, on a hunger strike at Combinado del Este

(HAVANA, Cuba, November 2 / Puenteinfocubamiami.org) - Last October 16, Rafael Ibarra Roque, president of Honor of The Democratic Party November 30 "Frank País", was brutally beaten, shackled and dragged through the prison floor then locked up in a punishment cell in the much feared " Pavilion 47" at the Prison Combinado del Este in Havana at which time he began an indefinite hunger strike.

According to a clandestine note taken out of prison by the political prisoner Adrián Alvarez Arencibia, Ibarra Roque is presently "plantado", wearing only underpants, in a hunger strike, demanding to be separated from the common prisoners who constantly threaten and abuse him under the orders of the penal officials.

In another paragraph of the note, Arencibia declares that all of Ibarra's personal belongings have fallen into the hands of common prisoners whom continue to constantly threaten his personal integrity.

According to the note, that same joined the hunger strike Pedro Argüelles Morán, the editor of Cooperativa Avilena de Periodistas Independientes (CAPI), and one of the 26 independent journalists arrested and unjustly sentenced to 20 years in prison in the last wave of repression which began last March. Argüelles Mora is also in a punishment cell in Pavilion 47 demanding also to be treated justly and be separated from the common population for his physical integrity is also in danger.

Today, October 2, 2003, sources confirmed to correspondents of Lux Info Press in Havana that the health of both prisoners has deteriorated seriously. They are extremely dehydrated and require intravenous alimentation. Prison authorities have denied any medical attention to both prisoners. They both languish in a punishment cell without medical attention and not knowing when is day or night, at the mercy of the officials of El Combinado del Este.

Ibarra Roque is the president of Democratic Party 30 of November "Frank País" and was unjustly accused of a presumed sabotage, according in Causes 485 and 589 of 1994. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and after being confined in several prisons throughout the Island and is presently in El Combinado del Este, a penitentiary of maximum security in Havana.

The organizations requesting an Urgent Action of Alert on behalf of these political prisoners in Cuba are, The Democratic Party November 30 "Frank País", The Pedro Luis Boitel Political Presidio, Pedro Luis Boitel Civic Resistance Movement, National Council of Civil Rights and The Jorge Mas Canosa Local Political Presidio.
