Dissident
sees pattern of increased harassment
HAVANA, December 12 (www.cubanet.org)
- A government opponent in Holguín
says he perceives a pattern of increased
harassment directed against dissidents lately.
César Román, an activist
with Cuba's independent labor movement said
he was harassed by two men last Wednesday,
who called him "a worm and a counterrevolutionary"
and told him to leave the city or things
would not go well for him.
Last Tuesday, officer Gustavo Betancourt
beat Román's daughter, Sandra Román,
leaving her with several bruises and black-and-blues.
Her medical report was submitted at the
local police station along with the complaint
for assault, but police refused to admit
them as evidence.
Román also explained that a few
days ago, two men who did not identify themselves
showed up at his 82-year-old mother's home
and told her that if she didn't keep him
away from anti-government activities, they
were going to put him in jail.
"In the last few months, repressive
activity has increased," said Román.
