Cuban journalist describes conditions
HAVANA, August 27 (www.cubanet.org) - "I'm
in Pinar del Río in a cell with little
ventilation from which I only go out for one hour
a day Mondays through Thursdays," wrote imprisoned
journalist José Ubaldo Izquierdo, 38, in
a letter to a colleague, Dorka Céspedes.
"We get one visit every three months, and
a nuptial visit every four. We have asked for
religious visits, but have not gotten them,"
added Izquierdo. Another dissident, however, Oscar
Elías Biscet, has not been granted any
visits in the four months he's been imprisoned,
wrote Izquierdo.
There are at least six known dissidents with
Izquierdo at the Kilometer 5 ½ prison in
Pinar del Río.
Izquierdo, who is wearing a cast on the arm he
broke falling down a flight of stairs while handcuffed,
complained about the water, which he called not
fit to drink, and the food.
"There's farm fish, badly cooked and served
with rice that has stones, seeds, trash and who
knows what in it. Once a week there's chicken,
but it's so little that you might as well not
see it."
Izquierdo, one of 75 journalists and dissidents
jailed in April, is serving an 18-year sentence.
