Cuban authorities accede to meet with pedicab drivers union

HAVANA, August 22 (www.cubanet.org) - The Cuban Office of Taxation agreed to meet with members of the pedicab driver s union after repeated appeals by the union to the Ministry of Transportation, and the Central Committee of the Communist Party.

The meeting has been set for September 20 at the auditorium of the Hermanos Aimejeiras hospital in Havana.

The Office of Taxation regulates licensing, which makes it germane to the workers’ demands. Foremost among the union’s demands is the unrestricted licensing of all drivers. Other demands by the drivers include an end to harassment by the police, the sale of spare parts at reasonable prices, and the rescission of a confiscation order against the pedicabs, which drivers say are their sole means of support.

The word now is that authorities will start licensing drivers according to the municipality where they live. The licenses presumably will be good only within each municipality.
