Cuban political police threaten government opponent

HAVANA, August 20 (www.cubanet.org) - Political police in the Isle of Youth threatened to prevent government opponent and human rights activist Huber Rodríguez from leaving the island to be with his young son when he has surgery in the U. S.

Specifically, officials said they would not issue Rodríguez an exit visa if he continued his activities. U. S. consular officials have already issued Rodríguez a visa so that he can be by his son during surgery and recovery.

Rodríguez is the president of the Human Rights Committee in the Isle of Youth, and every Wednesday he holds a vigil at home, in which several dissidents light candles and pray for the release of political prisoners.

Rodríguez has been detained and questioned several times before on account of his activities.
