Cuban political prisoners denied regular visit

HAVANA, August 19 (www.cubanet.org) - Relatives of two political prisoners were turned back at the gates of the Valle Grande prison August 13 and told the inmates they wanted to visit were in punishment cells.

"We had to travel for more than three hours to get there, and we couldn't see them," said the wife of Ricardo Borrero, adding that she had traveled with her 4-year-old and 8-month-old daughters.

Borrero and fellow prisoner Daniel Escalona were punished after a near-riot between themselves and a number of common inmates they say was fostered by the prison's political officer.

Escalona and Borrero were arrested January 30 and accused of disrespect to Fidel Castro. They have been confined in Valle Grande since then without a trial.
