Cuban
political prisoner forcibly given psychoactive
drugs
HAVANA, Cuba, August 14 (www.cubanet.org) - Imprisoned
Cuban political prisoner Oscar Espinosa Chepe
complained to family members during a recent visit
that he's been given psychoactive drugs that make
it hard for him to concentrate at the military
hospital in which he is interned.
Espinosa, who was granted a visit with four relatives,
including his wife and mother, told them that
on August 11 he had been visited by a psychiatrist
who had prescribed psychoactive drugs for him,
and that since then, he cannot concentrate on
his reading. His relatives report that they found
he had difficulties "speaking coherently
in a normal rhythm."
Espinosa stressed that he had not asked for psychiatric
attention nor does he think he needs it.
The relatives' visit with Espinosa, at the Carlos
J. Finlay military hospital where he was recently
transferred from prison, was held in the presence
of a Department of State Security officer.
Relatives said they were not allowed to speak
to Espinosa's attending physicians. Espinosa's
niece, a physician herself, asked that the psychoactive
drugs be discontinued, and the State Security
officer said he would send the request up the
chain of command.
Relatives said Espinosa is housed with two other
prisoners in a ward with little ventilation and
no running water.
