Political
prisoner offered freedom in exchange for collaboration
HAVANA, August 11 (www.cubanet.org) - Department
of State Security officials told jailed dissident
Leonardo Bruzón that he could be freed
if he retracted his previous activities against
the government in front of a camera.
Alcira Ávila, Bruzón's mother,
said that the officials had also requested Bruzón
should speak on tape about how well he had been
treated in prison, and about the medical care
he had received.
Bruzón said he resolutely refused to speak
in front of any camera unless it was to denounce
the psychological torture to which he has been
subjected. He also said starting today he will
not accept any more medicines.
Bruzón remains in a punishment cell at
the Combinado del Este prison, and is health is
reportedly not good.
Bruzón has been in prison for 18 months,
without trial and without being charged. He is
the president of the February 24 human rights
movement.
