Corruption in Cuban jails extends to medical personnel

VILLA CLARA, August 7 (www.cubanet.org) - From Ariza prison, in Cienfuegos province, prisoner of conscience Jorge Luis García denounced rampant corruption among medical personnel assigned to the facility.

García pointed out, for instance, that a Dr. Carlos, the dentist assigned to treat the facility's inmates, carries out a lucrative trade demanding money or gifts from inmates to render services. Also, García charged, the dentist uses medicines and supplies to perform dental work for guards, their families, and other officials.

Other doctors at the prison withhold medical attention from inmates. García described the case of prisoner Esnel Díaz, who for months now has complained about a painful, open sore on his left leg, and that doctors have refused to treat.
