Three dissident groups issue liberal manifesto in Cuba

HAVANA (www.cubanet.org) - The Liberal Democratic Party, the Cuban Change Liberal Movement and the Democratic Solidarity Party have issued a "Liberal Manifesto of Havana" in which they oppose the death penalty.

The joint document, drafted July 21, notes the government's crackdown on dissidents in March and April and the execution by firing squad of three young men who had hijacked a plane.

The document said the three groups consider the current economic crisis to be of national origin and not caused by external factors, an allusion to the U.S. trade embargo.

The groups also urged the international community to pressure the government to respect human rights.
