Independent journalist's daughter pressured

HAVANA, July 31 (www.cubanet.org) - Officials of the Department of State Security in Pinar del Río summoned the daughter of independent journalist Adela Soto to the department's provincial headquarters and grilled her for more than four hours.

Radelis Rodríguez, Soto's daughter, said the main thrust of the interview was to pressure her to convince her mother to abandon her journalistic activities. Rodríguez said officers told her Soto would be subject to Law 88, the Gag law, and could face up to 20 years in prison.

Soto had been held under house arrest during the recent wave of repression against civil society. More recently, a number of intellectuals loyal to the government held a rally repudiating Soto in a Pinar del Río park.
