Independent journalist jailed nearly 3 months with no charges laid

HAVANA, October 7 (Ernesto Roque Cintero, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The wife of independent journalist Oscar Mario González, jailed since July without any charges being laid, says she's alarmed at his physical deterioration.

Mirta Wong says her husband has lost over 30 pounds since being arrested and that he appears to have undergone mental changes. "As time passes and in the conditions which he has to live, with common prisoners, unable to sleep, he's reached a state where his health is being affected," she said.

Wong, relatives and friends have sent appeals to Papal Nuncio Luigi Bonazzi and to Cardinal Jaime Ortega asking their intervention. She said neither man has replied.

"I hope that the Church intercedes with the authorities on behalf of my husband, with whom I've been married for 20 years," Wong said.
