Housing authorities in Cuba threaten to evict Baptist minister

HAVANA, October 15 (www.cubanet.org) - Housing authorities in Manzanillo, Granma province, have ordered the eviction of a Baptist minister who has been renting the contested home for 9 months.

Pedro Pérez Torres, 67, says he rented the house with the approval of the Municipal Housing Authority when he relocated to Manzanillo from Santiago de Cuba to continue his pastoral work. At that time, says Pérez, authorities even gave him permission to remodel the house.

Last week, says Pérez, a housing official by the name of Gilda showed up at his home and told him the rental documentation was not in order and that he would have to vacate within 72 hours.

Pérez conducts religious services in the house for about 100 parishioners. He says he had planned to officially found the church in December.

Pérez says he has the support of the house's owner, who is in Havana. Housing authorities have told him, he says, that the house could even be confiscated from the owner.
