As he prepares to leave for Cuba, former President Jimmy Carter will meet
Thursday with a delegation from the Cuban American National Foundation.
Led by chairman Jorge Mas Santos, CANF will ask Carter to impress upon
President Fidel Castro the need to improve Cuba's human rights situation.
''We want [Castro] to know that we, the Foundation, are willing to change
our policy toward Cuba if they do something in exchange,'' Joe García,
executive director, said. "We're going to deliver to [Carter] a concrete
proposal that, we believe, is of extreme interest for the Cuban exile community
and its relation to the island and the democratic future in Cuba.''
Others at the meeting, which will be at the Carter Center in Atlanta, will
be CANF leaders Clara María del Valle, Francisco ''Pepe'' Hernández,
Domingo Moreira and Omar López Montenegro.
Carter will visit the island May 12-17 on a trip that he has said will not
change the Cuban government, but might help improve relations between Washington
and Havana. |
